Garden City, N.Y. – On Saturday, May 4, the Adelphi University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, along with the Panther Club, the Athletic Department's fund and friend raising arm, played host to nearly 150 attendees that were on hand for the first ever Wine Tasting Event.
"It was fantastic to witness the local communities, friends, alumni, administration, staff and friends of the program take part in the inaugural Wine Tasting Event,” said Senior Assistant Athletic Director, Carlo Acquista, who has been at the forefront of the fund raising efforts. “Nights like these are great for fund and friend-raising. I want to thank the sponsors of the event who helped make this night a success; the Panther Club, Lackmann Food Service, Palm Bay International Wine and Spirits, and JSM Brokerage. And a special thank you to all staff and coaches who assisted on the evening."
The event was put forth with an effort to raise money for the Panther Statue and was a huge success, bringing in over $10,000 on the evening. To date, the Athletic Department, through various efforts, has raised nearly $80,000 and is getting closer to their goal of $95,000.
Attendance included Directors of the Garden City Centennial Soccer Club, Marco Battaglia, a former NFL professional, and Bob Montgomery, former Associate Athletic Director and men's soccer coach and current Youth Director for the New York Red Bulls.
The initiative to erect a bronze Panther statue was started by the Director of Athletics, Robert E. Hartwell and the Athletic Department in the fall of 2012 and will be situated on the grassy knoll in front of the Center for Recreation and Sports as a physical symbol for the campus to rally around.
Breaking ground on the statue is scheduled for early next year with a projected completion date of spring 2014.
