Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University women's basketball team prevailed in a hard-fought 68-59 victory over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday afternoon at the Center for Recreation and Sports. With the win, the Panthers improve to 11-10 overall and 8-9 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 11-10 and 8-9 in the conference.
Several statistical milestones fell in the Adelphi win, highlighted by a 36-point performance by
Jessica Kitrys that pushed her over the 1,000-point mark for her career and tied the program single-game scoring record set by Kellie Dunlay in 1992. With a layup at 13:32 in the second half, Kitrys becomes the 20
th player in Adelphi history to score 1,000 points in her career. Kitrys' day was capped with a double-double, as she also pulled down 11 boards.
Sade Jackson wrote her name in the Panther record books as well. With her first assist of the game, Jackson became Adelphi's single-season record holder in the category with 159. She broke Jeanne Miller's previous record of 158, which was set during the 1989-90 season.
The Yellow Jackets broke out to a 6-2 lead over the first two minutes of action, but the Panthers would rally to tie the score at 6-6 behind back-to-back layups from Kitrys and Jackson.
The Panthers' largest lead of the early going would prove to be four points, which came twice at 12-8 and 14-10; when the visitors pulled to within three, Flynn would nail a three from to extend Adelphi's lead to 17-12. From there, the Yellow Jackets went on a 6-0 run to take an 18-17 lead, but Adelphi would reclaim the advantage moments later behind a layup from
Melanie O'Brien with 8:42 to go.
The Yellow Jackets took a two-point lead at 21-19 behind a three from Erica Johnson, but the Panthers would rally to tie at 21-21 behind a pair of free throws from Milhaven, and would take a 24-23 lead behind a two-point jumper from Kitrys. Kitrys then found the open basket on a layup with 5:26 remaining to put the Brown and Gold up by three, 26-23.
American International took a one point lead courtesy of buckets on back-to-back possessions, but Adelphi would end the half on a 5-0 run, with all points scored by Kitrys, to take a 31-27 lead into halftime.
A three from Ester Ebony, just 1:26 into the second half, brought the visitors within one at 31-30. From there, a back-and-forth 9-5 scoring run translated into a five-point lead for the Panthers, 40-35. A three from Milhaven and a pair of free throws from Kitrys gave the Panthers their largest lead of the game, 47-37 with 12:06 remaining.
The visitors would to within four at 50-46, with 9:16 remaining but the Panthers would respond with a 8-3 run of their own to restore a nine-point lead, 58-49.
A two-point jumper from Sydney Tepley pulled the visitors within two, 60-58 with 3:28 remaining, but a jumper from
Lauren Nuss restored the Panthers' four-point lead. Moments later, Jackson found a wide open
Kelly Mannix under the basket to make it a two-possession game, 64-59, with 1:27 remaining. With the visitors forced to foul, Mannix and Jackson each hit a pair from the charity stripe to ice the victory.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, February 13, when they host the Golden Knights of Saint Rose at the Center for Recreation and Sports. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
