Garden City, N.Y. – On Saturday, October 6, members of the men's and women's cross country teams volunteered their time at the Diva Half Marathon and 5k held at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, N.Y.
The race began in Long Island back in 2010 and has since expanded to a series of five races spanning throughout the country and Puerto Rico.
The squads arrived early on race day to help set up some of the water stations and other volunteer areas. During the race, they manned the water stop at mile two and handed out cups to the 5,000 runners as they traversed the 5k and 13.1 miles that start and began in Eisenhower Park. Upon completion, they helped clean up and break down the event.
“On a day that they can normally sleep in and recover from our weekday early morning practices, they volunteered their time to help out,” Explained Head Coach
Katie Rees. “I'm very proud of them for donating their time to help out fellow runners. It's always nice to give back to the sport you participate in; it makes it that much sweeter because you know how much hard work goes into training and being able to help out, cheer everyone on and watch them push through the pain and succeed is a great feeling.”
Among the 5,000 runners was alumni and Assistant Coach, Jennifer Mayo and Assistant Soccer Coach
Josefa Pace who finished within a minute of each other and under 1:47.
