Garden City, N.Y. - On Thursday, December 8, 2011 members of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, along with SAAC Advisor
Gordon Purdie, visited the Winthrop University Hospital Cancer Center for Kids. The student-athletes delivered bags of toys that were donated by each of Adelphi's athletic teams and also presented Winthrop University Hospital with a check, courtesy of Adelphi University's Cans for Cancer program.
After placing the gifts under the Winthrop University Hospital Christmas tree that stands in the Cancer Center for Kids, the athletes were able to watch as the children came and picked out presents. Many administrators from the center were present and gave the athletes a tour of the facility. They were shown the different rooms that patients use, which are each covered in beautiful artwork of cartoons for the kids. There were also able to see special rooms such as the music therapy room, the play room, and the Christmas toy room.
The athletes also presented a check, which is a result of the efforts of the Cans for Cancer program that each student-athlete at Adelphi participates in. It was a great experience and provided the athletes with an opportunity to meet director Linda Sweeney and the children who benefit from the Cans for Cancer program.
