East Meadow, N.Y. – On Saturday, October 1, members of the softball team volunteered their time to help out at the East Meadow Little League with the Special Olympics event. This is the third year the Panthers have been involved with the members of the EMLL and Special Olympics day.
There were over 50 athletes that participated on the day. They were broken down into five teams with four playing games and the fifth participating in a skills competition. The softball team was responsible for aiding with the skills station; more specifically, measuring for the longest throw of the day, timed the 'home-to-home' run, helped record the number of ground balls fielded correctly, and marking spots for the hitting portion.
Additionally, as the teams were playing, the Panthers were on the bench acting as coaches and providing moral support to ensure the athletes were having a good time. "This is the third year that we have had the opportunity to witness the great athletes at the Special Olympics, Head Coach Paige Smith said of the event. “It helps put our season in perspective and the team loves doing it."
