Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University baseball team played its second annual charity game against Hank's Yanks, a baseball team funded by New York Yankees owner Hank Steinbrenner, on Saturday, October 1, to raise money for the Hicksville Boys and Girls Club in honor of the late Donald Duerbeck, longtime Adelphi University public safety officer and loyal Adelphi baseball fan.

Dom Scala, Adelphi head baseball coach and a close friend of Duerbeck, emceed the event that brought together dozens of Duerbeck's friends and family to celebrate his dedication to helping others and his legacy of kindness in the community.
"I would like to thank all the people who were involved in this great event,” Scala said. “It was an enjoyable and successful day. Don was a special man and will never be forgotten here at Adelphi."

Pregame ceremonies included a presentation of flowers to Duerbeck's sister and brother, Eileen and Doug, a speech by the Hicksville Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Tom Bruno, and a reading of a poem by Public Safety Sgt. Peter Koutsoukos. A tree was planted by the baseball field in Duerbeck's memory and the Hicksville Fire Department raised the American flag behind the right field fence as the Color Guard presented the colors before the National Anthem. Duerbeck's grand nephew, Evan Barker, threw out the ceremonial first pitch to culminate the opening ceremonies in front of the packed stands.

The event raised over $1,000 for the Hicksville Boys and Girls Club, one of Duerbeck's favorite charities, and will be donated in his name.
