Last Thursday, April 15, Adelphi's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics celebrated its 40th annual Hall of Fame Dinner, honoring five inductees as well as special recognition award recipients. In total, approximately 200 guests were on hand for the prestigious event.

The evening began with a special pre-event reception for current and former Hall of Fame honorees held in the Campbell Lounge of the Center for Recreation & Sports. The event then moved to the Ruth S. Harley University Center for a cocktail reception for all guests.

The induction portion of the program began with Associate VP/Director of Athletics, Robert E. Hartwell presenting the Frank Cassell Memorial Award and Woodruff Awards. Former Adelphi men's soccer coach and administrator Robert Montgomery '74, M.A. '85, was presented with the Cassell Award. Madison Square Network's John Andariese and CUNY Executive Director, Zak Ivkovic were each honored with the Woodruff Award.

The Legendary Team award was next and consisted of Cheryl Innis, Marilyn Gilliard Wright, Marva Fearon-Pierce and June Griffith-Collison who made up the 1981 Mile Relay Team that took first at the AIAW Championship. Their coach and Hall of Fame honoree from 2006, Bill Dabney '77 gave the introduction.

Next Suzette McQueen, Assistant AD and Senior Woman Administrator took over MC duties for the induction portion of the ceremony. Tom Corrie '70, M.A. '76, Richard Ilsley, Jack Panzica '69, M.A. '74 and Mel Richardson were in attendance. Robert Grella '97, M.A. '04 was unable to attend but was able to give a short video acceptance speech.

The Adelphi University Athletic Hall of Fame was founded in 1961, under the direction of former Athletic Director George Faherty, to honor those former Adelphi athletes, coaches and friends who have distinguished themselves during their time at the University or thereafter.

The Hall of Fame Committee is made up of alumni, athletic staff and administrators. Nominations are accepted year round with selections made in December of each year. Click here for more information.
