The Adelphi University men's soccer team captured the 2009 Atlantic Soccer Conference tournament championship on Sunday, November 15 with a, 2-1 win over host Longwood University. The victory improves Adelphi's overall record to 13-2-4 and gives them a matching pair of 2009 ASC titles as the Panthers are regular season and tournament champions.
Adelphi took control early in the championship game, as the Panthers earned a corner kick just 13 minutes into the action. Senior Ryan Vulin took the corner, sending the ball into the Longwood box, where he connected with fellow senior Kevin Gluchowski who found the back of the Lancer net. Gluchowski's goal, his third of the weekend, gave the Panthers a 1-0 cushion that they would take into the half.
Freshman Issa Tall scored an insurance goal for Adelphi, just minutes into the second frame. Vulin had a hand in Tall's goal as it came off of another well placed corner kick. Vulin sent the ball toward the near post, where Tall was able to get a head on it, beating Lancer keeper Joel Helmick and giving Adelphi a 2-0 lead in the 46th minute.
Longwood put the pressure on the Panthers as they notched a tally of their own in the 67th minute of play. Brian Germain sent a free kick into the Adelphi box where Harvey Headley got a head on it, sending it past Kyle Blackmer and into the upper left corner of the goal. Despite Longwood's late effort, pulling to within a goal, 2-1, the Panthers closed out the game with strong play, coming away with the victory and the tournament title.
Blackmer collected the win, while Helmick was charged with the loss and credited with three saves.
