Garden City, N.Y. -
Adelphi University seniors Richard Byrd (Copaigue, N.Y.) and Hilary Pavels (North Woodmere, N.Y.) have been named Adelphi University Athletes of The Week for the week of November 29, 2010.
Senior guard Richard Byrd helped the Panthers to a 1-1 week, averaging 24.5 points and five rebounds. He had 21 points (11-12 FT) in a 76-74 home win over Assumption and notched 28 points and eight rebounds in a road loss to Saint Rose, 78-74. For his efforts he was named to the Northeast-10 honor roll.
Men's basketball returns to action on Wednesday, December 1 when they play host to Southern Connecticut State University.
Pavels was named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's Volleyball Third-Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSida). She is just the second Adelphi female student-athlete to achieve this honor, joining women's lacrosse player Jackie Bogensberger who was honored in the spring of 2010.
A physical education major, Pavels carries a 4.0 grade point average in addition to her athletic success. A two-time All-Northeast-10 honoree, she was also an AVCA All-Region selection in 2009 and a Northeast-10 All-Academic selection. This past fall she led the Panthers to the NCAA Division II regional semifinals for the first time in program history with a 3-2 victory over C.W. Post.
