SAAC Sponsors Alcohol Awareness Panel

Nov. 25, 2009

Garden City, N.Y. - On October 21, Adelphi University and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C) hosted a panel discussion on Alcohol Awarness for its 450+ student-athletes at the Performing Arts Center (PAC). Annabel Bazante, chair of the Nassau County Bar Association, Lawyer Assistance Program Committee and a member of the NY State Bar Association LAP Committee, was joined by Honorable Jerald S. Carter, Detective Richard Pedone of Garden City, Honorable Sarah L. Krauss, and Anneliese Bosco, a Mother Against Drunk Driving (MADD) representative.

The lecture coincided with Alcohol Awareness Week on Adelphi's campus, so SAAC felt it was a great opportunity to involve the student-athletes and learn more about alcohol consumption and the dangers it brings. Every athletic team attended this event to listen to what each panel member had to say. The panelists told stories that they have been involved in and that had affected their lives, in an effort to reach out to the student-athletes. After listening to their stories and facts about alcohol consumption, the students were allowed to ask questions to any member of the panel.

Some great questions were asked and clarified for the audience and the student- athletes were able to learn a lot more than what they had thought. Having a panel discussion created a different forum for this event, which created more interest and involvement on this very important and relevant topic. Different views and knowledge about alcohol awareness was shown through the different panel members. The event was a great success and S.A.A.C was honored to have such people come to educate the student-athletes about alcohol awareness and its dangers.
