Nov. 20, 2007 Garden City, N.Y. - Juniors Patrick Figueiredo (Compinas, Brazil) and Ify Anene (Reynoldsburg, OH) have been named Adelphi's Athletes of the Week for the week of November 19, 2007. Figueiredo was named the 2007 Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) Player of the Year on Thursday, November 15, in voting done by the league's coaches. A midfielder, Figueiredo led the ASC in scoring this season with 26 points, collecting 13 goals in 18 contests for the Panthers, who earned the #3 seed in the ASC tournament. In Adelphi's 3-2, ASC tournament semifinal loss to Longwood, Figueiredo scored both Panther goals. On the season he accounted for 13 of Adelphi's 22 goals. Anene traveled to Joplin, Missouri to compete in the NCAA Cross Country Division II National Championship meet on November 17, hosted by Missouri Southern State University. In her first appearance at a National meet Anene placed 79th out of 189 athletes, covering the 6K course in 22:33.5. Anene's time made her just the fourth finisher from the Northeast Region and is 33 seconds faster then her previous best at that distance. Anene closed out her most successful season in an Adelphi uniform. During the 2007 campaign Anene captured two individual titles, winning the NYU Invitational and the East Coast Conference Championship meet. She was named the ECC Runner of the Year and earned All-Northeast Region honors after placing fourth at the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional. Anene is also the first female runner to qualify for Nationals as an individual. |
