Exercise Science Program

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has formalized a long standing relationship with the Exercise Science Program. For more than 20 years, John Wygand, Professor and Director of the Institute of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness and his staff have served as a resource for coaches and student-athletes. They have provided the athletic teams with information, guidance and application of current, well-substantiated, scientific training principles and programs for year-round conditioning. The student-athletes undergo first rate training by a team of specialists who guide them not only toward safe and effective performance enhancement for their specific sports, but also for a lifetime of health and fitness.

These programs are conducted in our Adult Fitness Center that services over 200 student-athletes during hour long, high-intensity conditioning sessions. Our Human Performance Laboratory conducts physiological testing on Adelphi student-athletes to fine tune exercise programming; investigate abnormal responses to training and for research purposes. The following components are included in the comprehensive development of the Adelphi student-athlete.

  • Conditioning
  • Nutrition and Weight Control
  • Injury Management
  • Physiological assessments such as maximal oxygen consumption testing, body composition measurement and field testing
  • Guided team/individual conditioning programs

Teams that have worked through this program evidence positive outcomes and clear differences in their overall performance. Some have advanced to NCAA Regional or National Championships. This model is unique to Adelphi and is a true investment in the development and well-being of the student-athlete. We position the Adelphi student-athlete towards excellence.
