Sept. 2, 2009 Garden City, N.Y. - On Monday, July 20, 2009, Adelphi University held its 5th Annual Janet L. Ficke Golf Classic at Harbor Links Golf Course in Port Washington, NY. The event brought out over 100 supporters and participants who helped raise $20,000 for Women's Athletics at Adelphi. The Golf Classic was established in 2005 to support women's athletics at Adelphi University and is open to all supporters of Adelphi Athletics. Proceeds from the event were crucial this year, especially for the women's volleyball team. They received $5,000 from the event to assist with its trip to Hawaii as they competed against Hawaii-Hilo, Chaminade, BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific. The team was selected fourth in the Northeast-10 preseason poll, after posting back-to-back 27 win seasons and making two straight NCAA appearances. Adephi assistant Women's soccer coach, Kara Gazzano was the big winner in the 50/50 raffle, taking home $2,360! Gazzano, who was unable to attend the event, was called after her ticket was pulled. Ininitally she didn't believe the news and soon after hung up the phone on the first attempt. "I thought it was a bad joke", exclaimed Gazzano about the news. The event was capped off with dinner, which included a silent auction, provided by Executive Sports Group, and announcements of the raffle prize winners.
