June 6, 2008 Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi University and its 20 intercollegiate athletic teams posted a 3.225 cumulative grade point average for the 2007-08 season. Thirty-five percent of its student-athletes maintained a 3.5 or better GPA for the year. Women's athletics dominated in the classroom,with four of the top five GPA's going to women's teams. Volleyball led the way with an impressive 3.514 GPA, followed by women's track (3.363), women's soccer (3.39) and women's cross-country (3.358). Men's golf rounded out the top five with a 3.354 GPA. In all, 60 percent of Adelphi's athletes maintained a 3.0 GPA or better for the year. Athletes receiving academic recognition thus far this season are, Denise Auer (soccer), Lauren Flanagan (volleyball) and Matt Dispensa (cross-country) who were each honored by the East Coast Conference as they Scholar Athlete of the Year for their respective sport. Softball players Dely Francisco and Julie Schaper were each named to the CoSida/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District teams. |
