March 18, 2007 Garden City, N.Y. - On Tuesday, March 6, 2007 the Adelphi University Athletic Department hosted an Education Seminar on Social Networks and Hazing. Dr. Emmett Gill, a professor at Rutgers University, presented the affects that Hazing and Social Networks can have on the character, career and life of a student-athlete in colleges and universities throughout the nation. Dr. Emmett Gill interacted well with the 270+ Adelphi student-athletes and kept them intrigued. He set up different activities and reenactments of different situations that they could find themselves involved in. One of the main topics discussed during the seminar was hazing among student-athletes as a form of initiation and why it isn't positive for the teams to engage in this type of behavior that often times humiliates freshmen student-athletes. Another topic that was discussed was how social networks such as Facebook.com, MySpace.com, U-Tube.com, and other websites can affect the social well-being, character, and status of student-athletes. The speaker noted some of the consequences of having images on these websites and how they can affect not only the image of the university they attend, but their families or their own personal image. Also, noted during the presentation were proper ways of using social networks along with the benefits of using them correctly, such as reconnecting with old friends, networking, and promoting yourself in a positive way for employers to see. The athletics department provides several educational speakers each year for the student-athletes. Previous topics have included nutrition, career development and drug awareness. |
