March 9, 2007 Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University CHAMPS program made a visit to the Salvation Army of Hempstead, New York on Thursday to drop off donated items they had collected throughout the month of February. The student-athletes set up collection bins across campus and during the home basketball games. Donations included toiletry items such as shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste as well as paper products like paper towels, toilet paper and baby wipes. The Salvation Army is always in need of toiletry items, also known as "luxury items, as they are not covered by government assistance. CHAMPS members Lauren Flanagan, Carlos Techera and Tomasz Walczak, delivered seven boxes, including 300 disposable razors which were donated by the Adelphi University bookstore, to Carol Smith of the Salvation Army. In addition, Assistant Athletic Director Suzette McQueen made the trip to present the raffle check to Carol from the Black History Month Celebration which took place on February 24. The Go Girls Go Double Dutch team performed at the event and all proceeds from the raffle, $412 in all, were donated to the team to help with the purchase of new uniforms. "When I first spoke with Carol and invited the team to perform at Black History Month, I asked her what Adelphi could do to help the Salvation Army, McQueen explained. "She mentioned the constant need for toiletries and with the help of CHAMPS, we were able to make a sizable donation."
