Garden City, N.Y. -
Adelphi University seniors Richard Byrd (Central Islip, N.Y.) and Kaitlyn Carter (Mineola, N.Y.) have been named Adelphi University Athletes of The Week, for the week of February 28, 2011.
Byrd led the Panthers to a 1-1 week, including a Northeast-10 playoff First Round victory over So. Connecticut. He averaged 25.5 points, and four rebounds, and was a perfect 15-15 from the charity stripe earning Northeast-10 Player of The Week honors.
He also became the programs all-time leading scorer in a game played at New Haven last Wednesday, when he connected on a three-pointer just 89 seconds into play. Byrd is currently at 1,947 points, surpassing Malcolm Dowdy's mark of 1,897, set in 1991.
Men's basketball returns to action on Thursday, March 3 when they travel to Lowell, Massachusetts for a NE-10 semifinal contest against the #6 Riverhawks.
Carter, a senior midfielder, started her senior season off with a bang, as she led Adelphi to a 21-9 victory over Rollins College last week with a team high seven points on six goals and an assist, she also had three ground balls and one cause turnover.
Her effort kick started the Adelphi offense, as she scored three of Adelphi's first six goals, with all three coming in succession. Her scoring out burst earned Carter Northeast-10 Player of The Week status.
The top ranked Panthers will return to the field on Saturday, March 12 when they play host to Philadelphia University at noon in their home opener.
